Tour of Angel Island and
Visit of the U.S. Immigration Station Saturday July 28, 2018 at 9:30 am

This event has 2 different options. So select the one you want to join:

OPTION #1: WALKING TOUR of THE ISLAND.... Starts at 9:30 am:

We will start the day at 9:30 am by meeting in Tiburon at the Angel Island Ferry Terminal. (21 Main Street, Tiburon) where you will purchase your ferry round trip ticket ($13 to $15 per person). The boat leaves at 10 am sharp. Plan to arrive around by 9:00 am to park your car, walk to the Ferry Terminal, purchase your ticket and meet the group. We don’t want you to miss the boat! Parking information can be found at https://angelislandferry.com/parking-information/.

Once debarked, we will start our 8-mile walk and experience Angel Island State Park, a spectacular cultural and historic landmark in the middle of the San Francisco Bay. Indeed the Island is alive with lots of history. Three thousand years ago, the island was a fishing and hunting site for Miwok Indians. Later, it was a haven for Spanish explorer Juan Manuel de Ayala, a cattle ranch, and a U.S. Army post. From 1863 to 1962, the U.S. Immigration Station, Angel Island was an entry point for

hundreds of thousands of immigrants, the majority from China. During World War II, Japanese, and German POWs were held on the Island, which was also used as a jumping-off point for American soldiers returning from the Pacific. During our walk , you will re-live and learn this history.

Then, weather permitting, you will experience the most breathtaking views of Sausalito, the Golden Gate and Bay Bridges and, of course, San Francisco.

The tour is approximately an 8-mile walk going up & down hills and some stairs. At about mile-7, we will arrive by the U.S. Immigration Station where we will eat our picnic. You’ll need to bring your own lunch and drink as they do not sell anything on site.

Our guided tour of the Immigration Station by a volunteer will start at 1:45 pm sharp. This Museum is a place of reflection and discovery of our shared history as a nation of immigrants. You will understand what this Station was to the approximately one million immigrants who came from, or through, Asia. You will read their message. Your will know their stories. You will even hear their voices.

At the end of the tour, we will proceed with the last mile of our walk to return to the ferry boat that leaves at 3:30 pm (the last boat of the day).

For the walk, do wear comfortable walking shoes and clothing
layers; sunscreen and hats are always useful. This is the San Francisco Bay...could be hot and could be cool! Check the weather before leaving home. Bring a complete lunch and drink for you and your family.
